Accidental and Experimental Archaeometallurgy 2.1 Conference

HMS AGM 2022

3th-5th June 2022

Ancient Technology Centre, Cranborne
Organised by Vanessa Castagnino

Intended to celebrate the 10th anniversary (now, due to covid, 12th anniversary) of the hugely successful experimental conference at West Dean in 2010, and the subsequent volume of the same name, the Historical Metallurgy Society is hosting both practical metallurgical experiments and oral presentations to be held over a two-and-a-half-day event at the Ancient Technology Centre in Dorset from June 3rd to June 5th. 2022. With demonstrations, practical activities and oral presentations from smelters, casters, smiths and related craftspeople.

On site Accommodation

The Longhouse experience is available to 20 delegates. Sheepskin-strewed benches, running the length of the hall, will form the basis of your bed. You’ll need to bring your own bedding (sleeping mat/inflatable mattress, sleeping bag and pillow). There is also a Dorm room situated at each end of the hall, catering for four in two bunk beds. This means the Longhouse and the two Dorms can cater for 28 people in total.

There are five toilets, one of which has easy access; there is also a shower block containing two showers.

Local accommodation (off-site)

If this all seems a little too ‘Viking’, there are a couple of small guesthouses/B&Bs within a 5 miles radius:

  • The Sheaf of Arrows in Cranborne village (01725 551187/changing hands).
  • The Inn in Cranborne village (https://theinnatcranborne.co.uk/).
  • Chaseborough Farm in Wimborne Minster (2.5miles) @ £60 per night.
  • The White Owls Lodges at Verwood (3.5miles) @£60 per night.

Further afield, the site is in easy driving distance of Salisbury to the east (11miles) and Shaftesbury to the west (16miles).

Local Amenities

The village is served by two pubs on the square (The Inn and The Sheaf of Arrows), both of which serve food. There is a village shop, for basic needs.
